Barcelona City Council has initiated a new smart waste management program leveraging 5G connectivity to optimize urban sanitation services. The project, launched in partnership with Telefónica and local startup Urbiotica, aims to improve the efficiency of waste collection and reduce environmental impact across the city.

By equipping waste containers with IoT sensors and connecting them via 5G networks, the system provides real-time data on fill levels and collection needs. This enables dynamic route planning for collection vehicles, helping to minimize unnecessary trips and lower fuel consumption.

The initiative is part of Barcelona’s broader digital transformation strategy, which focuses on using advanced technologies to enhance urban sustainability and public services. Early results indicate improved operational efficiency and a measurable reduction in carbon emissions.
